I just finished a post and accidentally erased it. Irritation. Anyway, and again, yesterday at 5 pm the hospital called to say that Ed had been moved to first position on the surgery list, requiring us to be at the hospital at 5 am. Ouch! So, ay 4:30 am, we were up and out on the dark and misty streets streets to walk the mile over to the hospital. ( The shuttle buses don't start running until 6 am)
To my surprise, they let me stay with him thru the preop, an about 2 hour period during which many people came through asking him many of the same questions, and a flock of anesthesiologists placed a lot of lines. The surgeon came by in what looked like his jogging outfit.
This is the time of year not to get medical care at an academic center as all the rotations are starting anew. The epidural line was placed by the jr. Resident with a lot of supervision..at one point there were 4 docs at once, in a tiny space barely twice the size of the gurney ed was lying on. Amazing that they offered me some of that space.
By 8 am, he was lightly sedated and off to the main OR.
The length of surgery is uncertain. A critical question is the overall condition of his liver as a result of the chemo, and this is assessed visually. So, once they make the first, small incision, they will judge whether the liver is strong enough to have surgery on both lobes. If it is not, they will do only the left lobe, coming back later to do the other lobe. That surgery would last only two hours. If it looks good, they will make the full incision and they will do both lobes (ie, work on both lobes), and that surgery will take 4 or so hours. And i don't think they will be stopping anywhete forthe purpose of informing me. So, the surgery could be finished by 10:15, or it could go on until after noon.
News as it comes.
