I just spent about a half hour with the surgeon. Ed's out of surgery, in recovery. The liver segment removal was larger than they had hoped, but there is plenty left. One tumor was stuck to the diaphragm and thus they had to cut into the diaphragm, and that resulted in their having to leave a chest tube in. This just adds some more risk to his recovery (pneumonia), but he didn't feel it was a major concern. The major risk now is additional bleeding, but his hematocrit dropped only from 35 to 30 during the surgery.
Surgeon Park feels that things are good as they stand but that the next few days may be harder than hoped, especially because of the large incision and the chest tube. I will see ed in an hour or so before he goes to the icu, and he urged me to spend as much time as i could manage in the icu with hom. Tomorroe, by late afternoon, he should be on the floor..ie, out of the icu.
I will write more after i see him.
